I selected this grand Assam TGFOP1 Mahaluxmi for those who love dense but refined black teas. Long, regular whole leaves, dotted with golden buds, produce a mahogany cup with notes of malt, mild spices, and caramel. A characterful tea from the Indian terroir, with great body.

Brewing timer

Whole leaves need a little more time to unfold. 3 to 5 minutes is enough to obtain a deep and balanced cup.

CompositionThe nobility of a superior grade (TGFOP1)

Behind the acronym TGFOP1 lies the expression Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. It designates a whole leaf tea with a very high proportion of golden buds. It is the pinnacle of the Indian classification, reserved for the most carefully selected batches.

The whole leaves

Here, we are not dealing with a breakfast broken tea. The leaves remain whole, regular, and slightly twisted. In the cup, this gives a more gradual, nuanced aromatic rise, with a bright mahogany liquor rather than a block of raw power.

The golden buds

The tips are the young shoots still covered with a light down. When oxidized, they take on this golden color and bring a honeyed sweetness that rounds out the malty and spicy structure characteristic of Assam.

ExpertiseMy selection of a grand cru Assam

The Mahaluxmi plantation is located in the Golaghat district of India. This area, bathed in the warm and humid climate of the Brahmaputra valley, is ideal for the assamica botanical variety.

For whom?

  • To discover: The enthusiast looking for a single-origin black tea for the morning, less harsh than a classic broken tea.
  • For the amateur: The usual Assam drinker wishing to upgrade to whole leaves rich in golden buds.
  • For the enthusiast: The connoisseur demanding a complex summer Second Flush, expressing all the nobility of the Brahmaputra valley terroir.

TipsMy extraction protocol

For plain tasting cup

To truly appreciate this TGFOP1, I recommend 2.5 g for 250 ml of water at 90-95°C, and an infusion of 3 to 4 minutes. You get a deep, very clear cup where malt, caramel, and brown honey respond without harshness.

Stronger version

If you like stronger black teas, brew up to 5 minutes. The tannins intensify, the liquor gains structure, while keeping the sweetness of the golden buds. A very light splash of milk can then be interesting if you want to soften the edges.

The art of sharing: The beautiful whole leaves of this grand cru support a second, longer infusion (5 to 6 minutes). The cup becomes woodier, with pleasant notes of dried fruit and blond tobacco to discover.
FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Grade How does a TGFOP1 differ from an FBOP?

A TGFOP1 consists of whole leaves with many tips, designed for plain tasting and aromatic complexity. An FBOP is a broken leaf tea offering a faster infusion, perfect as a breakfast base.

Strength Is it a very strong tea?

This is a full-bodied tea, but its strength is balanced by the sweetness of the golden buds. It’s a controlled power rather than a harsh Assam. Everything depends on the brewing time.

Milk Can you add milk like with a breakfast tea?

You can, but I recommend tasting it plain first. If you like this style, a small splash of milk can elegantly round out the cup.

Energy Will it wake me up as much as coffee?

An Assam black tea contains a notable amount of caffeine. You will get a true stimulating effect, but with a more gradual and gentler rise than an espresso.
