CompositionWHAT — The power of the pearl beads

The appearance of this tea, reminiscent of gunpowder, results from a manual shaping technique inherited from the Tang dynasty.

Rolling process

Camellia sinensis leaves are quickly steamed to stop oxidation, then rolled into tight pellets. This compact form protects essential oils from air, guaranteeing superior aromatic preservation and a gradual release of flavors during infusion.

Aromatic profile

The liquor is clear, with a bright golden yellow color. The attack is distinctly vegetal (cut grass), followed by warmer notes of toasted hazelnuts. Organic certification ensures total purity of the leaves, free from pesticide residues.

TipsHOW — Preparation

Reference preparation

Optimal extraction requires water at 80°C. Use 2.5 grams of pearls for 250 ml of water. Infuse for 2 minutes for a mild profile, or 3 minutes for a stronger cup. The pearls will spectacularly unfold on contact with water.

Traditional variations

  • Mint tea: Add a handful of fresh mint leaves and a little sugar (or honey) after 2 minutes of infusion. The structure of Gunpowder is the only one capable of not being overwhelmed by the mint.
  • Cold infusion: Place 5g in 500ml of cold water in the fridge for 6 hours. You will get an extremely refreshing and low-caffeine iced drink.
The art of sharing: Serve this Gunpowder in a transparent teapot to watch the "dance of the leaves" as they open. It’s a visual spectacle that always precedes a successful tasting.
FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Name Why the name "Gunpowder"?

It is a Western name dating from the 18th century. English merchants thought these small gray balls resembled the grains of powder used in their cannons. In China, it is more poetically called "Pearl Tea."

Taste Is it bitter?

Bitterness only appears if the water is too hot or the infusion too long. At 80°C for 2 minutes, you get a noble astringency (which structures the mouth) but without unpleasant bitterness.

ROLLED LEAVESWhy is it called Gunpowder?Rolled pearls, toasted vegetal

The name comes from the shape of the leaves: each green tea leaf is tightly rolled into a small pearl that slowly unfurls during infusion. This rolling preserves freshness and concentrates the aromas — toasted vegetal notes and a finish of roasted hazelnut. Use water at 80°C and the pearls open to deliver a golden liquor.

Re-infusion Can the pearls be re-infused?

Absolutely. A quality Gunpowder tea can withstand up to 3 infusions. The second is often the most balanced because the pearls are already well opened.
